ASUU strike: FG will pay N23bn to ASUU next week

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu revealed that the federal government has agreed to publish the N23 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He said he spoke Tuesday to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, led by Senator Jibrin Barau.

According to him, the plans are on the ground to honour the agreement between the FG and the ASUU.

He said Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun had already approved a total of N53bn for the union so far, adding that the balance of N23bn would be unveiled Monday when live stakeholders would receive the check.

However, he said: "We do not agree with ASUU in its request for withdrawal from the TSA, I told them that this is not possible because it is a new policy and that the government will not change for no one.

"With regard to his short autumn control, we said that the reason emanates from universities that hire people without proper authority.

"For example, a university may decide to recruit 50 people without IPPIS advice. What they will get is the money they received last month, which will not be enough.

The minister finally said he was optimistic that the strike will be called no later than next week.
